The panel is sound and there are no signs of retouching under UV light. Apart from some light medium wear to all four corners, due to frame rubbing, this work is in very good condition. Colours: The colours are deeper and more subtle in the original.

In November 1889, Sisley settled permanently in the small town of Moret-sur-Loing, where he was to remain for the final decade of his life. Moret-sur-Loing afforded Sisley the opportunity for total immersion in the picturesque; his many landscapes and views of the town from this period delight in capturing scenes which are at once timeless and transient. Both Sisley's palette and choice of motif are entirely characteristic of the Impressionist style – indeed, many comparisons have been made between his work and that of Claude Monet.

With its loose handling, broad brush-strokes and graduated bands of colour, the present painting exhibits a greater freedom than is usually evident in Sisley's Moret-sur-Loing landscapes. His use of pale blue, yellow and peach tones to evoke the autumn sunset is wonderfully indulgent, giving a great warmth and depth to the scene.
