Catalogue Note

The mysterious figure in profile is a recurrent Symbolist motif in Redon's work. Surrounded by a vibrant assortment of different colours, Personnage de profil is delightful example of the beautiful and enigmatic compositions which were to prove so influential on future generations of painters, including the Belgian group, Les XX and the Nabis. As one prescient critic commented, "[His] work is bizarre; it touches the grandiose, the delicate, the subtle, the perverse, the angelic...It contains a treasure of dreams and suggestions" (Emile Hennequin quoted in John Rewald, Studies in Post-Impressionism, New York, 1986, p. 216.)
