Catalogue Note

The sitter in the present work, Hans Meyen, was an ambitious young bookseller at the famous department store KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) in Berlin. Schad became acquainted with Meyen at the legendary Romanisches Café, near the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, the meeting place of the famous and their entourages.
