Catalogue Note
The scene in the present work shows the Dutch village Laren, near Amsterdam, where Liebermann spent several weeks every summer from the early 1880s. He observed the people living in the village and made numerous studies of their daily life.
This group of girls either going to or returning from church inspired Liebermann during his stays in Laren and led to the execution of several oil versions of this theme, among them Sonntagnachmittag in Laren - Kirchgang in Laren from 1896.
In the 1890s the artist had difficulties selling oil paintings depicting proletarian subjects. His dealer at the time, Hermann Pächter, suggested replicating his oils in pastel to make them more commercially accessible.
