Condition

The print is in good condition as catalogued, with evocative tone in the area around the oval. Pale light-stain has darkened the paper tone overall, with the margins and verso further darkened by exposure to an acidic mount. Remains of paper tape appear at all sheet edges verso, with an associated line of dark fox marks at bottom, not showing through to the recto.

Catalogue Note

ONLINE ONLY Braque titled this print after its subject; PAL refers to the truncated title of the bottle of "Pale Ale" beer located in the center of the composition.  The print's execution date of 1911 (although the published edition didn't appear until 1945) correlates to a series of similar paintings executed by the artist in 1911-1912 which also feature the oval shape.  Braque said of this shape "With the format of the oval, I have found a sense of the horizontal and the vertical." (Valliers, Cahiers d'Art, 1954, p. 16)
