The work is generally in very good condition although there is some verdigris in the hair at the top of the head; also some abrasion to the patina in the neck.

At the time he created this vigorous self-portrait, Epstein was considered by many to be the greatest modern sculptor in Britain; his output of portraiture increased as other types of commissions eluded him, due to the hostile reactions to his avant-garde design proposals.
