Condition

Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down, hinged to the mount along the reverse of all four edges. There is a 1.5cm. diagonal crease in the upper right corner. Apart from a small area of rubbing to the sheet below the left eye and some light handling creases, this work is in good condition. Colours: Overall fairly accurate, although the orange is stronger and the paper tone is slightly lighter in the original.

Catalogue Note

Executed in 1917, Brustbild einer Dame von vorne is one of the finest examples of Klimt's studies for his painting Freundinnen II (Weidinger no. 236) from 1916-17 which was destroyed in a fire in 1945. The present work depicts an elegant lady in a fashionable fur coat, her head contemplatively resting on her right hand, a wonderful representation of Viennese society of this epoch.
