The board is sound. There is no evidence of retouching under ultra-violet light. Apart from some faint specks of foxing mostly located in the sky in the centre of the composition, this work is in good condition. Catalogue Note

In the summer of 1912, Maurice Utrillo spent two months in Sannois-sur-Seine. He had been suffering from a nostalgic sort of depression, and had taken refuge in the quiet streets of this small town outside Paris, where he made a quick recovery. For Utrillo, the most important form of rehabilitation was his art. The artist executed some of his most beautiful work of the time at Sannois, especially his series of street scenes. This work, with its sombre colours, flat finish, frenetic brushstrokes, and weighty, cloud-filled sky, certainly captures the artist's nostalgic sadness at the beginning of his stay. However, despite its dusky tone, this work remains a beautiful example of the escape Utrillo found in his painting.
