Catalogue Note
Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming production in 1917 and sale on January 31st of the following year.
This model, commonly known as an officer's wristwatch, gets its name from the fact that timepieces of this style were used by military personnel on both sides of the conflict in the First World War.
The enamel dial, the relatively small size, the simple shape of these pieces and the use of a cuvette harken back to the pendant watches from whence they evolved. Indeed, the main differences between these early watches and their forebears are the lugs and strap as well as the crown's new position at 3 o'clock for ease of winding.
It is interesting to note that the present lot was manufactured and sold during World War I and it is conceivable that it was originally purchased by an officer involved in the struggle.
Patek Philippe would return to the general design of this example on modern production models, such as the Refs. 3960 (lot 185), 5059 (lots 196-197) and 5029 (lot 237).
