Description

  • A SILVER OPEN-FACED WATCH WITH REPOUSSÉ SCENE OF VENUS AND CUPID1888 MVT 78478 CASE 201079
  • diameter 36mm.
• 12''' nickel lever movement, bi-metallic compensation balance, precision regulator, silver cuvette • white enamel dial with hairlines, Roman numerals to the inner hour chapter ring, Arabic numerals to the outer minute chapter ring, Louis XVI-style hands • silver case ornamented with repoussé work of Venus and Cupid • case numbered, cuvette, dial and movement signed

Condition

The movement is running, however we recommend service soon. The dial has two small hairlines near 3 o'clock, but otherwise is intact and in nice condition. The case looks lightly rubbed, particularly to the scene to back, but it is generally nice and attractive. There is a small dent to the back on the upper left side. Overall the case is in generally good condition and is a very nice example.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming production in 1888 with repoussé work and sale on September 19th, 1890.

The present lot is an excellent example of a Viennese-style watch by Patek Philippe. According to our research, only three late-19th century examples of silver Patek Philippe watches of this size have appeared at auction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the present example has been offered at auction.

An example of a gold watch with a very similar repoussé scene is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Pocket Watches, Vol. 1, Second Edition, p. 126., pl. 52a.
