Condition

The movement is running, however we recommend service soon. The movement is numbered 113437 and cal 1570. The dial is in nice conditio with only light marks and the luminescent paint to the numerals has aged nicely. The hour and seconds hand might have been changed at some point and might not be original. The case shows general wear and mild surface scuffs. Between the lugs there are some deep scratches that obscure the numbers partially. They appear to read 5512 and 2433355; the number inside the bace reads 5513. The bracelet shows light wear but is in nice condition. It is numbered 80 and 7206 and 1 69.

Catalogue Note

This model, Ref. 5512, was launched in 1959 as the first Submariner model to feature protective crown guards. By the mid-1960s, the dial would also feature the phrase 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified'. Ultimately this model with such a dial would become more collectible when compared to its cousin, Ref. 5513, which had a simple dial.

Considering the case designs of Refs. 5512 and 5513 are identical and the difference lies in the dial design, it is common to see examples like the present lot where the case back is stamped 5513, even though the watch is considered a 5512.
