Catalogue Note

The GMT-Master was created in 1955 on request of Pan American Airlines. The first GMT-Master, Reference 6542, was named after the world's standard time, the Greenwich Mean Time. It was produced from 1955 until 1959 and is the rarest of all GMT-Masters. The Reference 6542 innovated by the fact that it was powered by four hands, having a 24-hour hand in addition to the normal hour, minute and seconds hand. This new hand was complemented by a rotatable 24-hour bezel. The present lot, Reference 16710, is the modern version of the iconic Reference 6542.
