The movement is running, all functions appear fully operational while cataloguing, however it should be serviced soon. Attractively aged dial with areas of light spotting and discolouration. The case retains excellent definition and has light scuffs throughout, engraved crown and case back to outside back are still clearly visible. The crown appears to be original to the watch. In good overall condition for its age.

Only two Rolex models have been manufactured with moon-phases: reference 8171 bearing a non-Oyster case with snap-on back and reference 6062 with an Oyster case and a screw-down back. The rarity of the present example lies in its material; it is believed that reference 8171 was produced in the late 1940s to early 1950s mostly in yellow gold and in small numbers in pink gold and steel. The outside of the case back of the 8171 features the Rolex crown and case number. As both the crown and number are lightly engraved, they often polish out with age. The case of the present wristwatch is in especially good condition retaining excellent definition and a clear crown and case number.
