Condition

The movement is running, however we recommend service soon. The dial is nice and clearly stepped and the champagne color has aged very nicely with only a few very minor marks in it. The case shows light wear and scratches to the backs of the lugs. In addition there is a pin-point dent to the outside of the back. The numbers between the lugs are 2112909 and 6241. The number on the inside of the case back is 6241. Overall this is a very nice and rare watch in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

For a note on the 'Paul Newman' model, see the previous lot.

The present lot is particularly rare as most Daytonas were made in stainless steel. Those made in gold featured champagne rather than silvered dials, lending a particularly exotic look to the style.

Examples such as the present, made in 14k gold, were intended expressly for the American market. As that market is smaller than the combined total from the rest of the world, models made in 14k gold are rarer than those made in 18k gold, although they are viewed similarly in the market in terms of their collectibility.
