Starting in World War II, Rolex manufactured several models of large diving watches for Panerai, a military supply company for the Italian Navy. To achieve greater water-resistance, Panerai determined that by reducing the winding frequency, the risk of leakage would be diminished. For this reason, Panerai decided to improve their diver's watches with a manually wound Angelus calibre 8-day movement, providing up to 192-hour power reserve.
Panerai gradually enhanced Rolex's case design, adding structural features to the crown and lugs. The patented security crown guard shouldered the crown from shocks while still allowing the movement to be wound under water. The new case was fashioned from a solid piece of steel to avoid damage and to make the watch more durable, replacing the welded wire loop lugs of the earlier model.
The present wristwatch was most certainly inspired by Rolex's diver's watch, Ref. 6152, revived by Panerai sixty years later. The PAM00203 houses the original, but refurbished Angelus 8-day movement within a modern version of the 1940s "Luminor" case.
The present model was manufactured in a limited series of 150 pieces and is numbered 33.
