The present watch is number 10 in a limited seris of 10 minute repeating wristwatches in platinum produced by Audemars Piguet. The wristwatches are named in honor of John Shaeffer an American businessman who special ordered a similiar watch from Audemars Piguet in 1907.

The original watch was sold at Sotheby's New York, October 30, 1989, lot 104 and is illustrated in Audemars Piguet, by Pfeiffer-Belli, Brunner and Wehrli, p. 255 pls. 371a-b. The cushion platinum case design of the contemporary minute repeating wristwatch is reminiscent of the original wristwatch owned by John Shaeffer.
