Description

  • A YELLOW GOLD OPEN-FACED ENAMEL REPOUSSÉ WATCH CIRCA 1760
  • DIAMETER 46 MM
unsigned gilt brass full plate verge movement, pentagonal baluster pillars, pierced and engraved balance bridge, plain balance and regulator, the going train with fusee and chain • white enamel dial, Roman numerals for hour indications and outer Arabic numerals for the minutes, green enamel and gold repoussé pattern in the centre, Louis XV hands • case back with blue enamel imitating hardstone with applied gold repoussé scene representing Elizer giving  presents to Rebecca, a camel to the right and the well to the left, foliage motifs on the bezel

Condition

Movement not running, needs adjustment and servicing. Enamel dial with a chip at 6 o'clock, fine green enamel pattern in the center. Outer case with very good blue enamel attributed to Guillaume Bouvier, and gold repousse work attributed to David Cochin. A representative watch of the Louis XV period, a perfect example to illustrate the rococco movement of that period.

Catalogue Note

The enamel of the case of this watch is attributed to Bouvier and a similar example is in the Cognacq Jay Museum in Paris. A further example was in the Bloch-Pimentel Collection, Hotel Drouot, Me Ader, Paris, 1961.
