- An Early and Rare Lantern
leaded glass and patinated bronze
Provenance
Macklowe Gallery, New York
Condition
Very good overall condition. Four of the exterior mottled green glass panels with cracks, another with a small and minor corner crack. The reverse side of each green glass panel is plated with white opalescent glass on the interior of the shade. The upper bronze shade armature with an attractive green-brown patina with light rubbing and surface wear consistent with age and gentle use. A few of the hooks attached to the shade are slightly bent, with some small patina losses. With replaced socket and pull chain. With period hardware (partially visible in the catalogue illustration), which has been associated with additional hardware above (a longer chain and ceiling cap, possibly period) which is not visible in the catalogue illustration. These two units of hardware are presently connected with a modern threaded component. If desired, the top section of hardware could be eliminated and replaced with a suitable ceiling cap. A charming and rare lantern design with very pleasing proportions and impressive mottled glass.
