Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in beautiful condition. The canvas has been lined and if it were tightened slightly, the picture should be hung as is. The dark colors of the figure in the lower left have cracked slightly and some retouches have been added to reduce the cracking, other than this there are no restorations of note. The picture should be commended for its condition.

Catalogue Note

Another version of the present work and its pendant, The Sacrifice of Polyxena, form overdoors in the Antechamber of the Würzburg Residenz, Germany, and date 1722. Hannibal's upraised profile is a recurring theme in Pellegrini's painting, appearing in, for example, Angelica and Medor (Narford Hall, England) and The Happy Return (Alte Pinakothek Depot, Munich). Pallucchini dates the present picture to circa 1731.
