The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This picture has been fairly recently restored and although the varnish could be freshened slightly, the picture should be hung as is. The canvas has been lined using wax as an adhesive. The paint layer has been cleaned, varnished and retouched. The texture is quite flattened, most likely as a result of successive linings, and there has also been abrasion and restoration over the years. There are retouches to the faces and figures generally here and there, although not in any great quantity. Above the shoulder of the girl in blue there is a fairly large restoration and in the upper right corner there are numerous restorations. The old varnish on the left side has not been removed but there are some broad glazes addressing abrasion in the center left. The condition is certainly uneven but the picture should be hung as is.
