Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in beautiful state. The single piece of oak on which it is painted is un-reinforced. The paint layer is probably slightly dirty and the varnish is dull. Apart from a couple of small retouches in the figure's legs beneath the table, there appear to be no other restorations and the picture is in beautiful state.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

This painting repeats, with some differences, the left-hand portion of a horizontal composition by Teniers the Younger that was offered for sale at Christie's, London, July 5, 2007, lot 65.

This lot is accompanied by a photocopy of a certificate from Dr. Gustav Glück, dated Vienna, April 22, 1933, stating this painting to be a work by David Teniers the Younger.

A dendrochronological analysis of the painting by Dr. Peter Klein states that the panel is 17th-century oak dating to as early as 1635.
