Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This canvas has been lined using glue as an adhesive. The paint layer has been cleaned and varnished. The varnish is very glossy but illuminates the painting well. Under ultraviolet light it is hard to establish any retouches and despite the possibility that there may be a few cosmetic retouches here and there, we are unable to identify any of them, except possibly across the top edge and on the lower center edge. Essentially the picture is in perfect state with no abrasion or restoration visible.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Jacob van Walscapelle was born in Dordrecht in 1644.  From there he moved to Amsterdam, where he was a student of Cornelis Kick from 1664-1667.  In 1673 he entered the service of the municipal drapers' hall, where was still registered as working forty years later.  There are almost no dated paintings after 1685, which confirms Arnold Houbraken's statement that Walscapelle only painted for a short time.
