the artist with long hair and wearing a cap and ruffled shirt, his shoulders draped with a cloak, signed A. CARRiER on the reverse, on ebonized wooden socle. 

Condition

Some minor wear and chips throughout. Dirt in places. Some very well done restorations to proper right corner of hat. Minor surface restorations. A light clay slip has been applied to the surface. The ebonized base with minor dents and cracks. Minor chipping around base.

The signature on this bust indicates that it was made early in the sculptor's career; after 1868, Carrier-Belleuse changed his signature from A. CARRiER  to A. CARRiER-BELLEUSE.
