Catalogue Note

In this intimate portrait of a mother and child it is very probable that Plimer was influenced by the seminal portrait by Reynolds of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and her elder daughter (Mannings 2000, no. 329, fig. 1425). This painting, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784, reflected the new attitude towards the upbring of children that developed towards the end of the 18th century.
