Description

Comprising: a tie clip, with a central annular rock crystal reverse intaglio backed in mother-of-pearl, depicting the cipher of Edward VIII in royal blue, British hallmarks for London, 1961; a tie clip of textured woven design, signed Van Cleef & Arpels and numbered, a tie pin designed as a riding crop, a plaque brooch engraved with the initials .A.M.W., later metal pin, and another tie pin of loop design.

Condition

Reverse Intaglio Tie clip: Stamped 18 for 18 carat gold VCA tie clip: Stamped 750 for 18 carat gold. Numbered 19022. Riding Crop tie pin: Stamped 14K for 14 carat gold and an acorn. AMW brooch: Probably rose gold. Later metal pin. Loop Tie pin: Stamped rolled plate to inside of pin, some wear with base metal visible.

According to the Van Cleef & Arpels archives in New York, the Van Cleef & Arpels tie clip offered in this lot was purchased in 1951 by Mrs James Donahue (1886-1971) who was close to the Duchess of Windsor, Jessie Woolworth was the last surviving daughter of F.W.Woolworth, the founder of Woolworths stores.  Her son James Donahue (1915-1966), known as Jimmy became a constant companion of the Duke and Duchess in the early 1950s.

The initials A.M.W on the brooch are those of the Duchess of Windsor's mother, Alice Montague Warfield (1869-1929).
