Catalogue Note
Shaun Leane's jewellery incorporates romanticism, beauty and strength with a distinct style that has been influenced by the Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Victorian period. This locket is one of Shaun Leane's personal favourites, "It has a beautiful Victorian sentiment of being able to enclose a lock of hair of someone close". Leane's inspirations are modern romance and the strength and elegance of organic forms.
Shaun Leane started his career in Hatton Garden at the age of 16, where he trained and worked creating traditional English Jewellery. He then had formal training in fine art and silversmithing at the Sir John Cass College before striking out on his own and forming Shaun Leane Ltd in 1999, which is based in London. A pivotal moment in Leane's career came when he began a partnership with Alexander McQueen, and designed pieces for McQueen's second catwalk show 'Highland Rape'. The partnership continues and Shaun Leane has created pieces such as silver corsets, feathered head dresses and armour for McQueen. Their joint work has been celebrated at the Victoria & Albert Museum in a catwalk exhibition called 'Fashion in Motion'. Leane is highly involved in the fashion world and aside from his work with McQueen; he has collaborated with Givenchy and Swarovski.
Shaun Leane has been the winner of the prestigious UK Luxury Jeweller of the Year 2006, UK Jewellery Designer of the Year award in 2004 and 2005 and two Tahitian Pearl awards. In 2006, he received his Freemanship of the City of London for his contribution in the Jewellery industry. During his career Leane has created jewels for Van Cleef & Arpels, Garrards, Kutchinsky and Mappin & Webb. His designs have been exhibited in the Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the 'Anglo Mania' exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, which celebrated British Fashion from 1976 – 2006.
Shaun Leane creates jewels that enhance the wearer's strength and confidence, which has made him a success in the fashion industry as well as with celebrity clients.
