Description

The circular hinged case of oriental design, applied to the centre with a mother-of-pearl plaque inlaid with carved lapis lazuli, hard stone and abalone shell, depicting a bird on a flowering branch, the frame millegrain-set with rose-cut diamonds, the case further decorated with cream, red, green and black enamel, diameter approximately 58mm depth approximately15mm, signed Black Starr & Frost, restoration to enamel.

Condition

Overall good condition, with minor scratches and abrasions to enamel exterior, restoration to black enamel near hinge and minor scratches to interior. Weight approximately 74 grams.

Catalogue Note

Black Starr & Frost has evolved and had many company name changes, it is one of the oldest American jewellers and started out in 1801 as Marquand & Paulding based in Savannah, Georgia.  In 1920, with the addition of a new partner, Jabez Gorham, jeweller and silversmith, was the forerunner of the world renowned Gorham Manufacturing Company; the company became known as Black, Starr & Gorham and later in 1929 merged with Gorham Co becoming Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham Inc they had an establishment on the corner of 5th Avenue and 48th Street. The business was associated with Spaulding-Gorham Inc of Michigan Ave Chicago & 23 Rue de la Paix Paris.
