Description

Composed of nine oval plaques each depicting historic architectural  views in and around Rome, including; the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Sybil at Tivoli and the Pyramid o Cestius, to a fine trace link chain, each inset to a blue glass tablet, length approximately 600mm.

Literature

Cf: Shirley Bury, Jewellery 1789-1910, Volume 1, Antique Collectors Club, 1991, plates 82 and 54, page 173 and 250.

Cf: Amanda Triossi and Daniela Mascetti, 'The Necklace, From Antiquity To The Present', Thames and Hudson, 1997, page 102 for a similar example of a micromosaic necklace.

Condition

Several cracks to eight of the nine blue glass mounts visible with the naked eye, further chips to the edges visible with magnification, one plaque in good condition. Some scratches and tarnishing to the gold mounts consistent with wear, marks to indicate that the central seven micromosaics originally had a lower garland of connecting chain, the final two plaques are a later addition with significant lead solder to the reverse, necklace with later curb link extension, secure clasp with safety chain, could benefit from some careful cleaning by a professional, in overall good condition.
