Condition

Good condition overall with minor surface dust in the crevisses. The bird's wing in her left hand may have been slightly retouched. The beak of the bird in her right arm may have been slightly retouched. Very attractive and decorative terracotta.

Catalogue Note

La Jeune fille tenant deux colombes fait partie d'une série de statuettes féminines réalisées par Clodion dans les années 1780. Dérivant du modèle antique de la Vénus Callipyge, la Jeune fille portant une aiguière (collection privée, cf. op.cit. n°64) appartenait également à cette série. Ces statuettes permettaient à Clodion d'étudier les effets de tissu et de draperies plissées de la robe relevée, laissant apparaître les jambes des jeunes filles. L'inventaire après décès de Clodion de 1814 mentionne 'Une figure, terre cuite, de femme jouant avec deux tourterelles, sous sa cage de verre, prisée 6 fr.', aujourd'hui conservée dans une collection particulière.
