Condition
The patina appears to be slightly lighter in reality than on the photograph. Casting joints and plugs visible at several places, such as to Dejanira's upper arms, and one circular plug visible underneath Nessus' corpus. A few knocks to the surface of the bronze, such as to Nessus right arm and to the back of his left shoulder. Minor wear and scratches to the patina at several places, consistent with age and handling. Very good condition overall.

Catalogue Note
Giambologna a conçu son bronze du Centaure Nessus enlevant Déjanire en 1575/76, le modèle sera ensuite repris par son assistant Antonio Susini avec quelques variantes. Un bronze figurait dans l'inventaire du Grand Dauphin en 1689, et dès 1693, Louis XIV possédait deux bronzes dans sa collection dont l'un fut décrit comme 'Un groupe de l'Enlèvement de Déjanire par le Centaure, haut de seize pouces, estimé huit cents livres.'
Parfois groupé en paire avec l'Enlèvement d'une Sabine, ces enlèvements connurent un grand succès. Considérés par Gersaint comme 'une curiosité noble et propre à l'ornement des grands appartements ou des cabinets', ces bronzes trouvaient leur place de prédilection dans les collections d'amateurs.
