Condition
Very good condition overall. The light brown bronze covered with a thick black laquer. Minor wear to the patina and some surface dust in the crevisses, consistent with age and handling. As can be seen on the photograph, patina rubbed off at several places, especially to the upper legs, with some remains of verdegris. Very fine cast.

Catalogue Note
Le Fluteur antique est illustré sur une gravure de Perrier en 1638 à la Villa Borghèse et fut acheté par Napoléon vers 1811 pour l'exposer au musée du Louvre. Le modèle suscita un véritable engouement en France et fut copié en 1684 à la demande de Louis XIV par Simon Hurtrelle (1648-1724) pour les jardins de Versailles. Les marbres des sculpteurs Jean-Baptiste Goy (1666-1738) et Jacques Prou (1655-1706), également pour Versailles, ont disparus. Parmi les achats du Baron Le Plat pour Auguste le Fort à Paris figure 'une statue de bronze pareyllie grandeur le fluteur ou faune antique' (haut. 67,5 cm), aujourd'hui au musée de Dresde. Une petite version du Fluteur est conservée au musée Royal de Bruxelles.
