Condition

Very good condition overall, with minor surface dust in the crevisses which can be easily removed. A minor marble inclusion to his cheek. As can be seen on the photograph, minor chips to the edges of the base. In the back a spare element, probably destined to hold a fixation. Very attractive piece.

Catalogue Note

Formé auprès de son père Antonio, et par le sculpteur Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850) à Carrare, Raimondo Trentanove partit à Rome pour travailler dans l'atelier d'Antonio Canova. En collaboration avec ce dernier, Trentanove continue à travailler dans l'esprit de son maître et réalise entre autres des copies d'après l'antique, et une série de quatre reliefs pour orner le socle de la statue de Washington. Il excelle surtout dans l'art du portrait et on compte parmi ses chefs d'oeuvres le buste de Pie VII à Ancon, le portrait de Canova à la Galleria Moderna de Milan, ainsi qu'un important buste commémoratif à la gloire de Napoléon au museo del Risorgimento à Faenza.
Un buste presque identique a été vendu à Sotheby's New York en 1998, lot 83.
