les sphinges ailées reposant sur des bases à frises de rinceaux et masques à petits pieds à godrons en spirale
Condition
The illustration is quite accurate despite having a very slight orangish tint.
The sphinx figure: good chasing, particularly to the wings and head. On the bodies the chasing has left some quite visible circular marks.
The base: distinctive, pinkish-colored background. The chasing of the applied motif is fine. Some brown spots on the guilding, particularly on the masks. With later cast-iron support.
Good model in overall good condition.

On sait que le bronzier Quentin-Claude Pitoin livra des chenets à une sphinge couchée pour le garde-Meuble de la Couronne (voir C. Baulez dans La Folie d'Artois, "Bronzes et bronziers de Bagatelle", Paris, 1988, p.157, note 5.
L'auteur précise à cette occasion que les attributions à Pitoin se doivent de demeurer prudentes dans la mesure où il intervenait la plupart du temps comme fournisseur sans nécessairement être le fabricant des objets livrés. Le nom de Philippe Thomire fut également cité à cet égard mais il convient plus probablement de rapprocher ces chenets de l'architecte François-Joseph Bélanger (1745-1818) et Pierre Gouthière (reçu maître doreur en 1758), dans leur contribution à l'ameublement du comte d'Artois dès le milieu des années 1770 et jusqu'à la fin de l'Ancien Régime.
