A rare Louis XV ormolu, Meissen and Chinese porcelain watch holder Circa 1750

Description

  • height 11 1/2 in.
  • 29 cm
the watch movement signed on the backplate Terrier a Paris, contained within a pierced Chinese porcelain sphere enamelled  in green, yellow, brown and blue, surmounted by a mouse flanked by porcelain flowerheads; the voluted ormolu base fitted with a Meissen porcelain figure of a man playing the bagpipes on one side and pheasants on the other side.

Condition

In overall good condition. The color overall well matched to the original piece. The ormolu mounts slightly less green than in the catalogue illustration. Minor chips to the flowers with some flowers missing, as visible from the catalogue illustration. there is a hole which appears to have been drilled to the upper left side fo the porcelain clock case. Loss and restoration to the hand of the male figure, as visible from the catalogue illustration. Minor marks and traces of oxidation to the ormolu, consistent with age.

Catalogue Note

A pair of decorative objects in the Getty Museum incorporates identical Chinese porcelain spheres; it is suggested that the spheres were originally intended as lanterns or perfume balls, each is flanked by the figure of a Chinese boy and surmounted by a Buddhist lion; the lower part is fitted with Chantilly flowers and the whole rests on an ormolu base made circa 1740-45, see, F.J.B.
