Description

  • width across handles 12 in.
  • 30.5 cm
each molded with a Dulong pattern reserved with ornithological panels, the knop formed as either a young girl or young boy holding an overflowing flower cornucopia, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue. Minor chips and some restoration.

Condition

Covers: the male figural knop has been off and restored back and there is a pinhead abrasion/enamel chip to his right knee; both have occasional typical small chips to the applied flowers and leaves; the girl's left index finger is mostly chipped away; and the gilding around the molded cartouches of the same cover has some rubbing. Tureens: Both handles of the tureen in the center of the illustration have been off and restored back; and there are some very minor small patches of glaze abrasion around the rim of each where the cover sits.

Catalogue Note

A tureen with a different knop and some additional applied ornaments, but otherwise similarly decorated, is illustrated by Hans Syz, J. Jefferson Miller II and Rainer Rückert, Catalogue of The Hans Syz Collection, pp. 410-11, no. 270, where the authors note that this border pattern was first used in 1743 on a service for the Dulong company of Amsterdam.
