A pair of Empire patinated bronze and ormolu five-light candelabra circa 1805-10

Description

  • height 25 1/2 in.; width 5 1/2 in.
  • 64.5 cm; 14 cm
each with a patinated bronze figure of Victory supporting a lamp with smoke finial incorporating a candle nozzle and four curved candle branches with eagles' masks supporting the nozzles; raised on a sphere above a shaped rectangular base with recessed corners fitted with flaming torches.  The base pierced for wiring.

Condition

In overall very good condition. The color of the ormolu less electric, and more attractive and warm than in the catalogue illustration. The figures less green and more deep brown and attractive than in the catalogue illustration. Minor marks to the ormolu consistent with age. Minor traces of verdigris to the ormolu consistent with age. The ormolu mounts have been coated with varnish which is currently greatly rubbed and can be removed to desired original gilding effect. Restoration to the hand of one of the figures and losses to the finger of one. With very minor marks to the patinated bronze surfaces.
