Catalogue Note

A table, identical to the present table with the exception of the ormolu mounts, stamped by Pierre Roussel was sold, Christie's, London, December 12, 1991.  It is of some interest to note that like the present table, it was marked with an inventory number (6491).  Note was made in the catalogue that the table had formerly been fitted with an undertier.

Another comparable table with three drawers, fitted with identical corner mounts and stamped by Montigny (Philippe-Claude Montigny, maître in 1770) was in the Alexander Collection, sold, Christie's, New York, April 30, 1999.  Other tables of this overall design but unstamped have been recorded: one virtually identical to the Alexander example with the same corner mounts as the present table was sold, Christie's, New York 2000, lot 215.   Another differently veneered but with the same corner mounts was sold, Sotheby's, Paris, December 15, 2003, lot 64; each of these examples was attributed to Montigny.
