A fine mahogany musical longcase clock, Joseph Herring, London

12-inch dial with rococo scroll spandrels, matted centre with seconds dial and calendar aperture, the arch with tune selection sector engraved with twelve tunes in German, signed on a recessed silvered plaque Jos Herring, Royal Exchange, London, flanked by subsidiary strike/silent and chime/silent dials with engraved rosette centres and foliate ground, the substantial three train movement with six knopped pillars, rack and bell striking, the transversely mounted pinned cylinder playing one of twelve tunes every three hours or at will with twenty four hammers on a carillon of fifteen bells, the case with broken-arch moulded top and foliate frieze fret above stop-fluted hood pillars, the shaped trunk door flanked by stop-fluted pilasters, the panelled plinth with similar pilasters above a shaped apron

Dial in good clean condition. Movement is reasonably clean and looks as though it would run but may benefit from a clean, it appears to retain the original wheelwork throughout although some of the top bells apear to have been replaced. The case has been repolished including the inside and the backboard has possibly been replaced, there are old scuffs, marks and minor dents throughout. With pendulum, three brass-cased weights, winder and two case keys.
