An attractive burr walnut longcase clock, Richard Colston, London

11-inch latched dial with cherub and leaf scroll spandrels, signed Rich Colston, London, matted centre with seconds dial and calendar aperture, finely pierced hour hand, the movement with six latched knopped and ring-turned pillars, internal locking plate striking on a bell, the case with flat top moulded cornice and repouseé brass foliate frieze fret, spiral hood pilasters, rectangular trunk door with a brass-framed lenticle, the re-built plinth with later base, the whole veneered with well figured wood 

Dial in generally good condition but rings would benefit from re-silvering, good original hands, minute hand slightly bent. Movement needs a clean, escape wheel and pallets are replaced but otherwise wheelwork appears to be original throughout. Case is possibly associated but a very good fit to the dial mask, old cracks minor losses and repairs throughout, the plinth has been re-built and the base is later. Richard Colston was not officially apprenticed to a clockmaker but was made Free of the Clockmakers' Company by patrimony following the death of his father in 1682.  His son Thomas was apprenticed to him in 1702.
