An early gilt-brass lantern clock, William Bowyer, London

5½-inch chapter ring set on a flower engraved plate signed William Bowyer, Leadne hall, fecit along the lower edge, concentric alarm disc engraved with a rose, two train posted movement with early conversion to verge and bob pendulum escapement, iron outside count wheel with angled slots, the frame with slender tapered corner columns, turned feet and finials, leaf fret to the front, replaced  dolphin frets to the sides, and top mounted bell

Gilding mostly rubbed off case, alarm work removed, front right foot slightly bent, side frets changed, side doors and back panel lacking, original rope drive converted to chains, early conversion to pendulum, hanging hoop and wall spurs lacking. Movement very dirty. With 2 weights, 2 counter weights and wall bracket.

William Bowyer is believed to have been working in London by 1620 putting him firmly in the first period of English lantern clock making. He became a member of the Clockmakers' Company by 1632 and took a number of apprentices.  Although little is known of his life, it is thought that he died in 1653 when he is last recorded as attending the Company.  This clock is typical of his work in having the broad stroke of X reversed and angled slots to the count wheel.
