A pair of French patinated and gilt-bronze-mounted campana urns on marble plinths in the manner of Pierre-Philippe Thomire first half 19th century

the gadrooned rims above bodies cast with classical scenes which include Venus and Juno, above a waisted gadrooned lower section applied with gilt-bronze masks supporting fluted handles decorated with acanthus, the trumpet shaped bases on gilt-bronze-mounted rouge griotte plinths

Very good condition. Some minor stains to the bronze with slight verdi gris. The gilding is exquisitely chased and has been cleaned. There are some very minor small patches to the marble bases. Beautiful model.

These vases relate closely to examples produced by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). Thomire was one of the foremost bronziers of the Louis XVI and Empire periods. He trained as a sculptor and was apprenticed to Pierre Gouthière's workshop in 1774. He made gilt-bronze mounts for the most important ébénistes of his time such as Weisweiler and Beneman and was associated with the coronation coach of Louis XVI. Napoleon granted him the title Ciseleur de L'Empereur.  He was often inspired by works of art from Antiquity, as seen on this pair of vases.
