A fruitwood inlaid amaranth, satinwood mahogany and marquetry side cabinet in the manner of Jacob first quarter 19th century

with a veined white marble rectangular top within an ebony frame, the frieze mounted with two exotic birds flanking a fountain amongst a floral spray, the panelled door inlaid with a diaper motif with a roundel enclosing a mask of Apollo, within a border of scrolling foliage and husks, enclosing three shelves, the stiles with canted free standing neo-classical winged female terms, the sides inlaid with a flamingo on a trumpet entwined with serpents on a platform base

Marble top restored in several places. Frieze mount lost its gilding but is very nice quality. There are various horizontal cracks as visible from photograph, some of which have been restored in the past, especially on the front, which is opening up again and will require some attention, but can easily be filled. Some minor chips and scuffing to base commensurate with age and use. There are some minor sections chipped off and restorations to the veneer. Evidence of some old minor glue repairs to ebonised mouldings. The carved figures are very well executed and there are some old restorations to them, which have been very well done and are hardly noticeable. One of the shelves is oak and two are pine and possibly replacements. Very chic. In otherwise good condition.

The quality of the veneer, design and carving together with the diaper enclosing foliate motifs is very much reminiscent of the work of Georges Jacob. See for example, a secrétaire stamped G. Jacob, conceived in a similar vein inlaid with diapers, sold in these Rooms, lot 65, from a Private European Residence, 3rd March 2005. The mask of Apollo in the centre of the door of this cabinet is a recurring motif used by Jacob on his pieces.
