A pair of Italian tooled gilded tan leather boxes in the form of books with the Chigi-della Rovere coat-of-arms, Roman 19th century

the spines with AVTENTICA VARIA Lib. IV and the other with  Lib. III

Sold from a Private Collection in Piazza Farnese, Vol. II, Sotheby's, Casino dell' Aurora Pallavicini, 18th May 2004, lot 488.

Colour less orange more natural and attractive than in the catalogue illustration. Old very minor marks and scratches and stains, although one of the boxes has a large water stain on the top. The brass clasps are possibly later replacements, as there are small round holes cut into the leather, where possibly a previous clasp had been attached. The faux pages of the book are made from painted wood. In overall good condition.
