modelled by J.J. Kändler, standing with arms folded, wearing a black hat, green coat and puce cloak, flower-applied scroll-moulded circular base (restoration to the left corner and right shoulder of his cloak, restoration to hat)

Catalogue Note
John Kelsey known as John the Quaker travelled to Constantinople in order to convert the local population to Christianity. It is said that as he preached in his own language nobody could understand him and so he was put in a mad-house and had to be rescued by the British Ambassador.
The 'Cryes of London figures' were modelled by Kändler and Reinecke after prints by Pierce Tempest after Marcellus Laroon. See Yvonne Adams, Meissen figures 1730-1775 The Kaendler Years for a similar figure, no. 106, p. 46. The female Quaker and companion to John Kelsey was sold in these Rooms on 22nd November 2007, lot 218.
