A fine and rare ormolu quarter striking bracket clock, Antoine Bertrand, Paris

6-inch enamel dial signed Antoine Bertrand, Paris, the movement with circular plates and later  conversion to anchor escapement with Brocot suspension, striking the hours and ting-tang quarters on two bells, the waisted case surmounted by a seated oriental gentleman his right arm raised and holding a spear with which to slay a dragon, above finely cast and chased rococo scrolls, foliate trellis frets and two putti holding clubs, the conforming bracket mounted with a ho-ho bird 

Dial has chips to the edge around the screw hols and minor chips around winding holes, it has been drilled through XII for the later suspension regulation. The movement is complete but much in need of a clean, later conversion to anchor escapement and later Brocot suspension. The case is very dirty but appears to retain much of the original gilding and should wash up well, the right front foot has an old repair. With a pendulum and winder.

Antoine Bertrand began trading from Trinity Hospital, Paris in 1744 and became a master clockmaker in 1750 when he moved to rue Saint-Honoré. He died before 1760.
