Overall good restored condition; top and bottom associated; the top with minor lifting to brass stringing, the inlayed brass with minor wear and scratches; the cross banded molded edge with small chips to the banding and with some replacements and in painting; old age cracks to the platform, small age crack to the top of the stem; old repaired break to dart-and-egg molding to base of stem and with subsequent old repair breaks to one leg at joined with standard; slight rubbing and wear to carving, minor chips and wear to the feet; overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises.

The top of this tripod table is inlaid with brass in a fashion that originated from a small group of emigrant cabinet-makers who came to London during the reign of George II.  One known maker to have produced such tables is Moravian cabinet-maker and embellisher of musical instruments Johann Friedrich Hintz (d. 1776).  Hintz (also spelt Hinz, Hints and Hinds) traded at 'The Porcupine', Newport Street, and on May 22, 1738 advertised a sale of 'A Choice Tea-Boards, etc. all curiously [finely wrought] made and inlaid with fine Figures of Brass and Mother of Pearl.  They will be sold at a very reasonable rate, the maker Frederick Hintz, designing soon to go abroad' (Beard and Gilbert, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 434).  In addition to Hintz, John Channon and the firm of Landall and Gordon are also known to have produced work of this nature.
