Condition
Overall restored condition; chair one with chip to molded collar of splat and with age cracks to base of splat one of which is slightly loose; restored chip to cresting rail at join with top of right stile; the underside with extensive old worm; the underside of right side seat rail with infilled chips; the back right leg with extensive worm damage at join with seat rails; old glue to front legs at joins with rails; later corner blocks; chair two with old glue repair to top of splat and with a repaired break to cresting rail at join with top right stile; the right side of the molded collar of the splat possibly replaced; age cracks to base of splat and right side slightly loose; old glue to joints of legs and rails; extensive old worm to rails; later corner blocks; back legs spliced; redecorated; overall numerous chips and losses to painted surface.

L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, illustrates an undated design for an oval-back chair with 'honeysuckle' splat that is similar to the backrest of the offered chairs, fig. 268, p, 176, found in the Gillow Estimate Sketch Books in the Westminster City Libraries.
