Description

  • 210.2 cm; 120 cm; 63.5 cm
the edge of the secretaire drawer stamped FROM W WILLIAMSON & SONS GUILFORD. Feet later.

Condition

Overall good restored condition; back left corner of cornice with old repair; some inpainting to the front right canted corner of cornice; minor small chips and nicks to cornice and with some replacements to the dentil moldings, several flower-head carvings to the left canted corner and all to the right canted corner lacking; the drawer linings with a later added thin batten to the sides, and with some age cracks to the drawer bottoms; small nicks to cock-beading of drawer fronts; the solid mahogany drawer fronts appear to retain their original handles and keyhole escutcheons; the side panels to the upper and lower sections with age cracks and showing minor separation at lines of construction; the feet later; the secretaire drawer with age cracks and wear to the leather lined surface, age cracks and small losses to the veneers, patches around the lock plate ; the back boards with typical age cracks; overall with old marks, scratches scuffs and bruises.

The present lot belongs to a group of very similar chests on chests, with a molded cornice with outset square corners, bead-and-reel carving above the dentil-moldings, the canted corners stiles fluted or stop-fluted above rectangular fielded panels; see Sotheby's, London, July 7, 1997, lot 47; Sotheby's, New York, April 13, 1996, lot 419; Sotheby's, London, July 5 1996, lot 39; Sotheby's, New York, The Arthingworth Collection, December 12, 1996, lot 166; and Sotheby's, New York, April 26, 2008, lot 142.  Most contain three short drawers over four long drawers to the upper section and three or four long drawers to the lower section.
