A Regency rosewood and parcel-gilt and marble top console table in the manner of Gillows circa 1810

Overall good restored condition; the top appears to be original with some very minor stains and scratches; some chips and wear to edges of the top; minor chips and wear and restoration to the gilding; small triangular loss to veneer of right front side corner; minor chips to rosewood veneers with very minor areas of lifting and stress cracks; overall with some minor old marks, scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use.

The monopodia of this console table are very similar to those of a pair of daybeds commissioned by Colonel Hughes of Kinmel Park, Denbighshire, from Gillow in 1805, which have leopard's-head monopodia with muscled legs and palmette necklaces.  Additionally, the incorporation of the coronet-form collars above the paw feet seems to be particular to Gillow's work.  The suite was dispersed in 1930 and one of the daybeds was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; see Desmond Fitzgerald, Georgian Furniture, London, 1969, fig. 136, W.38.1930.  The other was sold, most recently, at Christie's London, The Property of Mr. Edward Sarofim, November 16, 1995, lot 143.

The design of the monopodia also relates to a library table and sofa table by George Smith in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, plates 83 and 87.  Smith also makes use of the leopard's-head monopodia with muscled legs and palmette necklaces; however, each design lacks the coronet-form collars, as demonstrated in the present lot.

A similar console table attributed to Gillow was sold, Christie's, London, July 8, 1993, and another, Christie's, London, February 6, 1997, lot 175.
