A pair of Regency ebony-inlaid mahogany caned bergères circa 1815

Overall good condition; with a nice color and old surface; the first with a chip to the back molded edge of cresting rail above join with left stile; small chip and fillet to top of left stile; some later wood battens to the inside edges of the side rails; the caning with a later wash; the toes with some minor losses with slightly loose casters; the other chair lacking the metal boss of the side of the front left leg; the feet with some small chips and restorations; casters slightly loose; overall each with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises consistent with age and use; together with two velvet-upholstered seat cushions.

Thomas Sheraton in The Cabinet Dictionary of 1803, pl. 6, illustrates designs and describes the form of these chairs as 'Curricles, from their being shaped like that kind of carriage.  There may claim entire originality, and are well adapted for dining parlours, being of strong form, easy and conveniently low, affording easier access to a dining table than the common kind.'
